You are going to walk through the Maqam Bbuilding Block Method for understanding what tarab actually is, how it happens, and how you can begin creating it in your own musical expression.
By the end of the 5 days, you will have practical tools to add more depth, emotion, and tarab to your performances — without needing to become a full-time conservatory student, spend decades guessing, or turn yourself into a copy of someone else.
Hi I’m your host Maya Youssef
I help Arabic music enthusiasts learn maqam and taqsim so they can create performances that move people to Tarab without conservatoire training, virtuoso technique or decades of theory.

I’ve been playing the Qanun for over 30 years.
The BBC named me the “Queen of the Qanun”.
I’ve been recognized by the UK government and Arts Council England as an Exceptional Talent.
I’ve performed at world-renowned venues like the Royal Albert Hall and WOMAD, and have received multiple international awards for my compositions and performances.
Born in Syria and classically trained since the age of 8, I earned my BA from the prestigious High Institute of Music in Damascus and a Master’s in Ethnomusicology from SOAS University of London—where I also taught maqam.
